Breakaway Fund Appeal

A COMMUNITY group has launched a £6,000 fundraising appeal to send 24 disabled young people from across Sussex on a special weekend holiday.

Eastbourne AM Rotary Club is funding the three-day residential break called Breakaway in September at Lodge Hill Centre at Watersfield, near Pulborough, in West Sussex, The cost of the holiday is £250 for each young person – and now the Rotarians are asking the people of Sussex to sponsor a child.

Fred Cox, Past President of Eastbourne AM, said the trip is just amazing.

He said: ‘We have been running Breakaway for a number of years now, and it really is very special because it gives the 24 people a holiday while at the same time giving the parents and carers, and the wider family, much needed respite care.

‘It is such a happy time, and by the time you include the specialist nurses, volunteers, Rotarians and friends, it can amount to more than 70 people.

‘Last year the total number was 72 – and that was 72 people having a great holiday, bonding together, having fun, sharing experiences and doing activities they never thought they could do.

‘It runs from Friday morning to Sunday evening and it really is non-stop. One minute the disabled young people can be abseiling, the next minute they could be tunnelling, the next minute they could be having lunch.

‘It is a great success, and the challenge is to raise the £6,000 that we need.’

The Rotary Club works in partnership for this project with the charity SASBAH – the Sussex Association for spina bifida and hydrocephalus- which has bases at Gun Hill, Chiddingly, in East Sussex and Worthing in West Sussex.

CEO Rom Sanglaji – also a Rotarian – said: ‘Breakaway is very special. Some of the people who go are from our charity, and some are from a similar charity in Kent.

He said: ‘We like this to be inclusive so we invite service users from across Sussex, and please never underestimate the importance of this weekend break, both for those who go and those who stay behind at home and can have a break from day to day life caring for others.’

A fundraising dinner at the Cavendish Hotel in Eastbourne has raised £1782 towards Breakaway 2016.
