On Sunday 16th August 2009, Eastbourne AM Rotary Club was challenged to a fun cricket match by Hailsham Rotary Club at Hellingly Cricket Club.
Eastbourne AM won the toss and elected to field, big mistake, none of our team could bowl well but their batsmen could certainly bat.
It was fortunate that we had agreed that it was to be a limited over match, 20 overs each and when a batsman reached 30 runs he had to declare, two of their batsmen reached this total.
AM bowled bravely on for their 20 overs and limited Hailsham's batsmen to 168 runs, 33 of which were from wides and no-balls.
Tea was served between innings, a splendid array of sandwiches and cakes, fresh backed scones with jam and cream, what a shame that AM had yet to bat. Filled with to much tea and cakes, some of AMs team took the opportunity of the open bar to to take on liquid courage.
AMs opening batsmen padded up and strode gamely to the crease, the score at 16 runs, Dave Tritton was out, leaving AMs President to rush to the crease, not for very long though, out for a duck, it took longer to don the pads than to bat. AM soldiered on through the onslaught of medium paced bowling by Hailsham, but reached the grand total of 68 runs all out.
A great afternoon for fun and fellowship with other Rotarians, the sun shone, the refreshments were devoured, AM came second, what more could one ask, well coming first would be nice.
