Eastbourne AM a very successful fun quiz night in November, raising £300 for local charity BabyAid which was matched by £300 from the club. Founded by RN Fred Cox and some of his BT colleagues in 1990 after seeing the shocking pictures of Ceausescu-era orphanages, BabyAid works in Romania with both orphans and families made homeless through the collapse of their heavy industries. In December 2009 Fred, fellow RN David Tritton and other volunteers travelled to Galatz in Eastern Romania, where a shanty town has been erected on waste ground by unemployed, homeless steel workers and their families. Some 90 families live in this makeshift village, sharing water from one well. While in Galatz the volunteers bought food for the families to last the winter, distributed Mustardseed Christmas boxes and helped provide some cheer for the residents. BabyAid's aim for 2010 is to employ a social worker for the shanty town - the one funded by the local government was made redundant and BabyAid hope to be able to raise enough to re-employ her on a full-time basis so that she can be a voice for the community. Further projects are to improve sanitation and diets in the village and to assist as many back into work as possible.
If your club would be interested in supporting BabyAid or you would like further information please contact Eastbourne AM Secretary David Tritton on david.tritton@sussex.pnn.police.uk or 01323 638494.
