Projects President Rachel's main objectives for Eastbourne AM this year are: Emphasis on public awareness of our Rotary Club and Rotary in general. The Rotary motto for this new Rotary year is Rotary Shares and that is what we want to do in our Club, in our community and internationally. I want to invest in the youth of our town as they are our future Rotarians by pursuing the formation of an Interact Club through one of our schools in the town. In order to have a healthy, vibrant club we must have fun and fellowship and through our Social Committee’s efforts we hope to make that happen.
Listed on this page are some of the many projects that Rotarians from Eastbourne AM are involved with. TREE OF LIGHT At Christmas time the Rotary Clubs of Eastbourne AM and Eastbourne Sovereign organise a special Christmas Tree which is located outside the Congress Theatre. The tree is covered in a host of white lights each one dedicated to the memory of a loved one. The importance of the tree is the comfort it gives to families and individuals throughout the area. Everyone has been affected at some time in their lives by the loss of a relative or friend, visiting graves is not always practical and to be able to remember someone special at Christmas is important. Individuals are invited to sponsor a light in memory of a loved one and the money raised benefits a number of local charities. Click on the image to visit the Tree of Light website. COMMUNITY SERVICES We hope to provide service to the local community by providing events or by raising funds for charities particularly local charities. 1. KIDS OUT –This event took place at the Eastbourne Miniature Railway on 9/6/07, we are fortunate to have the owners as members of our club. There were over 70 children enjoying the train rides, a snack lunch, face painting and playing in the grounds. This is now an annual event. 2. RACE NIGHT – We always want to try new and exciting events to raise funds. In October we intend to hold a special race night, details to follow. 3. CHRISTMAS CARDS – This year we have chosen a local scene and hope to encourage businesses and individuals to purchase our cards. The cards can be ordered with a personal message or a business name and logo. 4. HAMPERS FOR THE REFUGE - Every year our members donate luxury food for the hampers with the hope that this will provide some support to the families in the Refuge over the Christmas period. 5. CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY – This has become an annual event which takes place at the TA Centre in Eastbourne. They have given us tremendous support over the past four years. Last year there were over 70 children with their families. Each child received a personal gift from Santa, watched an entertaining performance by Mr Pineapplehead, enjoyed a snack lunch and joined in some games. The event is already booked for 15/12/07 when we believe that there will be a special visitor again, if there are no rheindeer problems. 6. WIN A CAR – We have been fortunate to have been selected for the past few years. This year the funds raised were given to the Sovereign Swimming Club for Disabled People who used the funds to help them to purchase new hoists. 7. QUIZ NIGHT – This fund raising event took place in February at the Fisherman’s Club. We hope to repeat the event in February 2008. 8. OPERA NIGHT WITH ALFIE BOE – This was a spectacular event that took place at the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne. We were most fortunate to attract such a first class performer. The event raised £6000 which was donated equally to the M S Society, to assist them to purchase a much needed minibus, and to the Chestnut Tree children’s Hospice. 9. MAKE A WISH - District Governor, Denis Spiller's preferred charity. Our President held a special fund raising evening with a balloon race, disco and train rides, and the club raised over £1,000 for the Make a Wish appeal.
YOUTH The Youth Committee is continuing to develop its range of projects. The business mentorship scheme has been running successfully at Ratton School with one particular mentor, who is a life coach, working with a group of 14 students. The scheme continues to develop with some mentors moving towards e-mentoring whereby student and mentor keep in touch through e-mails after an initial face-to-face meeting. In 2007-2008 Youth Committee will be sponsoring their third Hockey Golf event which is organised and hosted by Ratton School. The event takes place in the Summer and provides children from junior schools in the area to compete for medals and a trophy. The idea is to get children who would not normally be involved in sporting events to participate and the idea clearly works as one child proudly announced last year that “this was the first medal they had ever won!” 2007-2008 will also see Youth Committee, in conjunction with International Committee, purchasing and filling 5 Aqua boxes. International Committee has provided the funding to purchase the boxes and these will then be distributed to year groups in Ratton School. It is then up to each year group to decide how they are going to fill the boxes. There is a short DVD which will be presented to those involved explaining the important role which Aqua boxes play in disaster relief. It is hoped that this project will develop so that pupils will eventually take on the role of fund raising to purchase the boxes rather than simply filling them. It is hoped that this may be able to be achieved in conjunction with setting up an interact club. Finally, but not least, we will be organising in conjunction with Eastbourne Rowing Club, a schools’ regatta whereby pupils from local secondary schools will be invited to put teams together to compete in a friendly competition designed to promote awareness of the sport of rowing, and to raise money for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Scheme and a project which is being run by the Rotary AM Club and Sasbah primarily providing holidays for disabled young people and respite for parents or carers but also involving able bodied young people as volunteers which can be linked with other accredited qualifications such as Duke of Edinburgh Awards. SOCIAL As a breakfast club, we have very little time on Friday mornings to get to know each other better and further develop the friendships and fellowship that bind us together as a club to achieve the objectives which are important to us all. This year, in addition to the club’s organised social events, we plan to meet informally, on the last Friday evening of each month at various pubs. We have tried to select pubs that are in different areas so that hopefully all members get an opportunity to visit a pub close to their home. During the summer and autumn we have selected pubs with a garden so that, weather permitting, we can enjoy the pleasant evenings. We are all very busy people and have family, work and other commitments but it would be nice to get together and get to know each other better when we can – so if you are free on the last Friday of any month please come along. Meet at 8pm. WALKS The walks on the Downs proved to be very popular and so we would like to continue these. So if you are free on the 2nd Sunday in each month – please join us. We have tried to organise walks that start near a pub to accommodate anyone who would like to meet for lunch before the walk. Meet at 12.30pm for lunch and 2pm for the Walk. If you wish you can team up with others and leave a car at the start and finish - unless you are fit or brave enough to walk back to where you started! SOCIAL EVENTS We have tried to organise events that are mainly inexpensive and hopefully will be a lot of fun. Please try and support these events whenever you can. Family, friends and any ‘prospective members’ are most welcome to join us so please bring them along. If you have any questions or need further information about any of these events please contact a social committee member: Diane Hammond, Fran Moore-Khan, Nadine Ashford, Steven Holt, Mike Cross, Mike Wadey and Rachel Wadey. IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON ANY PROJECTS THAT SHOULD APPEAR IN THIS LIST, PLEASE FORWARD INFORMATION TO LYNDA DEAN ldean@reiddean.com |
